The History of Coffee

Coffee is one of the most popular drinks in the world, but its history is often overlooked. The story of coffee begins in Ethiopia, where legend says a goat herder named Kaldi discovered it. He noticed that his goats became very energetic after eating berries from a certain tree. Curious, he tried the berries himself and experienced the same effect.

From Ethiopia, coffee traveled to the Arabian Peninsula, specifically to Yemen. By the 15th century, it was being grown there and traded. The first coffeehouses, called "qahveh khaneh," appeared in the Middle East. They quickly became important social centers where people gathered to talk, listen to music, play chess, and discuss current events.

Coffee arrived in Europe in the 17th century. At first, it was met with suspicion and was even called "the bitter invention of Satan." However, after Pope Clement VIII tasted it and approved, its popularity soared. European coffeehouses became hubs for intellectuals and businessmen. In London, they were known as "penny universities" because for the price of a coffee, one could engage in stimulating conversation.

Today, coffee is a global industry worth billions of dollars. From its humble beginnings in Ethiopia, it has become an integral part of cultures and daily routines worldwide.
